I enjoy the holidays to a certain extent, I don’t like flying and I don’t like feigned smiles and holding my tongue around others while they try their damndest to get a rise out of guests. I enjoy Christmas again now that I have children. But getting/giving gifts to other adults seems superfluous most of the time.
Rather, I look forward to proper snow up in the mountains for snowshoeing and what not, a short countdown to racing like the Daytona 24 hours, Rally Monte Carlo, etc. And then there’s the short jump to spring where I get to see all the results of gardening.
Yes, I’m glad all that rigmarole is over. How about you guys?

I enjoy the holidays, but I also like putting everything away and hitting the reset button a new year.

I needed a new year, last year sucked hard. Plus hiring and everything basically stops for a month and I am left sitting around.

I like having my place to myself, sans guests, the ability to go back to my fairly consistent routine.

Our routine was shaken up this year because we drove to VA to see my parents. We usually chill out, eat beefstick and cheddar cheese and OD on college football.

Yeah, we had to fly back to Texas. I hate the commute required there for damn near everything. Glad to be home.

God no! I heavily dislike the holidays most years. I’d rather just take off to the snow and have a good time rather than spend it with my family and away from my friends etc. I do usually enjoy New Year though.

We drove, 3,500 miles round trip. Three days up, then two 14-hour days to get home. That gave us an extra day at home before Mrs. Ttyymmnn had to go back to work. I’m really glad we did it that way. Gave us two nice days of chill.

My favorite things about holiday seasons are big sales right after Christmas and having tacky lights everywhere. I miss my outdoor lights already.

We have little kids, and Christmas is totally magical with them. That said, December is totally, completely, utterly exhausting for me. I also start coaching in December, and the beginning of our season is always tough getting everyone settled in. Between that, regular work, and the usual household chores, then shopping and trying to be thoughtful for the whole rest of my family - because isn’t that the whole point? - I can barely keep it all together. Then, our kids are bouncing off the walls and asking for help playing with their new... whatever... and I came back to work on January 2nd feeling more tired than I have since we flew overnight to Iceland on no sleep, back in October. 11 days of “vacation” left me dead.
So yeah, January is fine with me. I’m back to only working and coaching and taking most of the kid duties during the week. Seems manageable, by comparison.

I’ve had to redefine my experience of Christmas as my life has gone through its phases. These days, it’s mostly about family and faith with a sprinkle of magic still there. Plus traditions. The family traditions are very comforting to me. My daughter is young enough to still be very excited and to hold on as long as she can.

I can’t agree. I’m having trouble getting back into nose-to-the-grind mode at work, and also remembering why I took all that time off in the first place.

It’s easier when you’re without kids and don’t have to travel. I’m in the learning process of how to deal with all this added stress.
